Barriers to using Cleaning Stations to Prevent spread of Disease affecting trees spread
2015-10-27 19:16:19 UTC
I am starting a project looking at ways of encouraging people walking in New Zealand's kauri forests to use the cleaning stations provided at the start and finish of tracks. These stations are designed to help reduce the spread of PTA (Phytophera taxon agathis)a ,fungus-like organism causing kauri dieback disease. Any information on design of cleaning stations, associated signage and most effective placement of signage and stations would be helpful.

Looking for research on barriers and benefits to dog-owners keeping dogs off pest-free islands
2014-11-11 18:21:52 UTC
I am working on a project to stop pet owners taking their dogs onto the pest-free islands in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Some of the intended species reintroduction work will be affected if we cannot guarantee that these islands are no-dog zones. Takahe, for example are unlikely to be reintroduced.
I am trying to find out the barriers and benefits associated with dog owner behaviour.
This summer we will be gathering baseline data on the incidence of dogs being landed on the islands to try and determine which kinds of boats and where they come from, hopefully this will help when we come to identifying the barriers and benefits through focus group and other survey work.
Thanks Helen

Hi Inger
I am finally getting going with the project to stop pet owners taking their dogs onto the pest-free islands in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Some of the intended species reintroduction work will be affected if we cannot guarantee that these islands are no-dog zones. Takahe, for example are unlikely to be reintroduced. As with your project I am trying to find out the barriers and benefits associated with dog owner behaviour. Have you come across anything in your reading that might be helpful? This summer we will be gathering baseline data on the incidence of dogs being landed on the islands to try and determine which kinds of boats and where they come from, hopefully this will help when we come to identifying the barriers and benefits through focus group and other survey work.
Thanks Helen

Invasive Species: Encouraging Campers to check Gear
2010-02-11 16:32:38 UTC
Project Island Song encompasses 7 pest-free islands in New Zealand's Bay of Islands. The eventual aim is the restoration of the islands and the reintroduciton of endangered species. The area is popular with local, national and international campers, kayakers, yachties, tourists, fishers etc. so the risk of rats/mice reinvading these islands is high. I am looking for ways of getting these various users of the Bay to stop, check their gear, then go and have fun on the islands. We have a strong visual brand and slogan, signage on the mainland and the islands, posters on commercial boats, biosecurity flyers being given out to all and sundry - but... the change in behaviour i.e. checking gear before leaving the mainland is not happening as frequently or as consistently as we would like. Any help would be appreciated. Helen
