Cycling & Public Transport Programs for Families with Young Children
2009-08-24 12:14:34 UTC
Hello,
A couple of years ago I set up Mums (& Dads) on Bikes rides in Northcote, Melbourne, for families with young children, designed especially for young children. The very short rides go to child-friendly destinations via quiet back streets and off-road paths, and are carefully planned to mostly avoid hills. They are generally no further than 10km return, with lunch and play in the middle. The rides often incorporate a train ride to shorten distances and to show families there is an alternative to the car. Children of all ages are welcomed, whether they are in tow or on their own bikes, with or without training wheels. Our motto is "No one is too slow. We're happy to stop for a rest, play, snack, breastfeed, nappy change or until a tantrum is over."
The program includes emails with details of upcoming rides and route maps (to enable families to meet us en route and to share bike and child-friendly cycling routes) and other women's and family-friendly cycling events.
I established the rides because all other family bike rides were around 20km long - too far for most young children on training wheels. I'm currently evaluating the program and need to do a literature review. Does anyone know of similar programs operating elsewhere?
Thanks,

Re: Information on Recycling for Tradesman

I recently had a large cupboard/bookshelf made by a furniture maker who uses recycled timber. I found out that it was made from some floorboards and window frames of an old house. It looks fabulous, and the guy is very busy, suggesting a lot of people are interested in purchasing furniture made with recycled timber. I'll include his website as it has photos - you can see how beautiful furniture made with recycled timber looks: http://www.roughedgeart.websyte.com.au/site.cfm?/roughedgeart/

Re: Looking for Travel Behaviour Change Programs Used in Secondary Schools

Hi Melanie,
The Cycling Promotion Fund that I work for runs the annual Bicycling Achievement Awards to reward and recognise innovation and to foster ideas. For number of years now we've had a category for Schools that promote and encourage cycling to schools. A number of secondary schools have been nominated in that time. Last year, 6 high schools were nominated and a TAFE, as well as many primary schools.
Award booklets can be downloaded from www.cyclingawards.com.au or hard copies ordered from the Cycling Promotion Fund: [email protected].
Fraser Coast Council have developed a list of resources and links for active transport to school: http://www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/community/documents/Resources%20and%20Links.pdf
Hope they're good leads.
