Re: Water Quality, Riparian Zone Management, Storm Water Management and Sustainable use of Water Resources
2012-05-09 10:16:05 UTC
Chilliwack, B.C. canada
We constantly are battling developers who are void of concept
when it concerns the environment and repeatedly convince politicians that the
City should develop its riparian areas as they are wastelands anyway. How do we stop that destruction of riparian areas? Latest project is to pave over about 18Ac of riparian area in a natural "loop" (eventually to become an Ox Bow lake); the application requests development abutting the bank of the creek so there is no 'set back and no natural filtration of effluents from the planned high rises. Our major problem in society is that most politicians fly by the seat of their pants deficient in a broad base of knowledge and experience required to make meaningful decisions, i.e. typically they make a decision based on a few numbers or cave in from pressure exerted by lobbyists.

The development of LED has been restricted to a very monochrome (white only) type of luminiscence. Are there newer bulbs that emit the full spectrum of normal white (daylite) light?

Hi Cathy,
Yes, "me too" would like a copy of your survey. Appreciate that very much.
I'm trying to develop a curriculum that I can cast at the High Sxhool students and the general population as well.
Energy use reduction, recycling, water in aquifers and general vigilence in garbage disposal are some areas I'm working on.
Progress is slow and we need to be persistant.

Re: Barriers & Benefits Residential Solar PV Systems
2010-07-12 15:12:37 UTC
To: Danielle Woon,
I too authored a report for private enterprise back in 2001 on Solar PV systems (as did Lisa Dugdale.) Included in the system design were back-up and 110/220 Volt AC inverter capabilities.
Most people I surveyed in 2004 didn't know what was meant by a solar panel, alternative energy, wind turbines; nor did they know what an off-grid system was. They thought that the cost (over $100,000.00 for a meaningful system with reverse power metering) was excessive. By far the greatest barrier to PV, whether they knew what it was or not.

Re: Bike Sharing or Free Bike Programs to Reduce Emissions Related to Transportation
2010-01-26 11:15:13 UTC
Hi Amanda Kilburn,
All of the "bike to work" campaigns work fine on level ground. How are we supposed to bike to work when we live in a city full of hills? Vancouver, Canada. OK, some of you will do it, but most of us can't physically. Furthermore, Vancouver drives will run over you unless you keep well out of their way. Vancouver bike riders have become agressive as a result and are defiant of traffic, even when threatened by a gravel truck they don't move over. Any ideas how to resolve these real problems?

Re: Data on Values and Changing to Sustainable Living Habits

TO: Elsie Harvey of "GLOBE" - Toronto.
Hi Elsie, good perspectives on the environment.
I'm developing a curriculum in Environmental Studies for High Schools in Chilliwack, BC. I started at that point as I feel that adults (most) show little concern for the state of the environment because it's gradual degradation has no consequence on their life, i.e. they will be long gone.
Therefore, we must start at the "grass roots" level, somewhere in the grade school system. Starting with Grade 11/12 results in an evolutionary curriculum, whereas, starting at Grade 1 is expedient but takes 12 years before any meaningful results are realized.
I would like more information on your projects.
Thanks.Donald Costin, Chilliwack, BC
