Re: Office Behavior re Energy & Water

Hey there,
Quick idea to add to all the other great ones. Offer a monthly drawing for a free lunch, breakfast, whatever. Each time someone carpools, walks, bikes, takes public transit to work, they can put their name in the fishbowl to be drawn. This way you can track the behavior too!

Hi John,
I really like the idea of you creating a contest between schools. You might be surprised at how much interest that helps create. also, there is some great math opportunities as well. Maybe you could get a local bakery to donate chocolate chip cookies to the school that wins or the reusable water bottle idea..... Kids could create cool graphs showing the results and even post on the district's website.

Hi John,
I noticed on your original post you were also asking for a achievable and measurable pledge for kids. How about a commitment to a trash free lunch? Every day kids bring in juice boxes, individually wrapped cheezits, chips, etc and plastic sandwich bags. Get the kids to only use reusable containers. Are you already composting at the public schools.?
Kids could weigh their trash for a 2 week period before you start the pledge and then twice a month once program is in place. Maybe your organization could buy 20 reusable water bottles every time the weigh in is 25% less than the average before you started the challenge. Just an idea. We just started this at our school and the kids are really into it!

Hi Kevin,
Try contacting someone at Efficiency Maine. They recently implemented a program targetet for this range of improvement. I would think they'd have some studies to share with you.

Re: Banning Cosmetic Pesticides

Hi Steven,
Our coastal community in southern Maine has been working on reducing fertilizer and pesticide use on our lawns through a social marketing campaign, Lawns for Lobsters. It has proven to be very successful. The Kennebunkport Conservation Commission created an all inclusive approach by working with the town to get them to adopt "best management practices", working with the lobstermen to hear their stories of changes in the catch, offering opportunities for all local lawn care providers to be posted on town website as supporters of the program, sending out a newsletter with 10 bullet points to all residents educating them on the program, and holding a public event on the topic.
However, what really got the movement going was creating a fun loving decal with a lobster holding a shovel and a tagline, "Lawns for Lobsters". Community members who participate in the program get a lawn sign, think of those nasty warning signs that go in after a lawn has been sprayed, but instead, it's a cute lobster saying "lawns for lobsters". They are cropping up all over town and this winter we went around to several other communities in Maine that wanted to learn how to implement the program.
I'd be happy to share with you any documents or give you our logo to use.
Best,
Sarah
