Re: Community Garden in Affluent Suburb
2010-10-26 12:33:49 UTC
I am not sure if you are aware of Surfrider's Ocean Friendly Gardens Program. I am not sure if it would be appropriate for you region or not...but we've found that connecting folks to the idea that everything we do in our yards, businesses, schools, etc...has an impact on our oceans to be quite successful. The program is well developed with a regional coordinator and has a workbook for residents to make improvements to their own gardens. We have work days at someone's home and everyone pitches in to build it. The model could work well for a community garden.

Re: Backyard Water Conservation Workshop

In Ventura, CA we have partnered with Surfrider Foundation to promote their Ocean Friendly Garden program. It essentially educates residents in CPR for our landscapes; Conservation, Permeability and Retention. It combines water conservation, habitat and storm water pollution prevention campaigns. We've had good success with it. http://www.surfrider.org/ofg.asp And when I worked in Tahoe, we used the term "Tahoe Friendly Landscaping"....so, perhaps there is a iconic natural feature to your area for which you can inspire conservation and protection.

Here in Southern California some cities have partnered with Surfrider Foundation to promote "Ocean Friendly Gardens" which emphasize CPR or Conservation, Permeability and Retention for our landscapes. Essentially we are trying to encourage residents to look at water conservation and storm water runoff together. By creating "sponges" up the watershed we can mitigate much of the downstream pollution and recharge issues. Here is a link. http://www.surfrider.org/ofg.asp

Re: Reducing Fertilizer Use

The City of Ventura is hoping to work with Surfrider Foundation in coming months to host homeowner workshops on their "Ocean Friendly Garden" program. The basic concept is to conserve water & resources, increase permeability and water retention of the site through LID tools and techniques. I will post results as we move forward. In the meantime, check out their blog site at http://oceanfriendlygardens.blogspot.com/

Pet Waste Outreach Campaigns
2010-01-26 15:52:12 UTC
I am interested in hearing from others who've conducted successful pet waste campaigns; specifically showing a marked behavior change (i.e. more poop picked up)....
