Re: Cost of Solar Power
2012-01-12 11:26:16 UTC
Thank you Ken. Recent news articles contend that the depressed price of natural gas is diminishing the cost benefits of solar. Your references will be helpful in assessing the broader context.

Cost of Solar Power
2012-01-11 12:26:23 UTC
Does anyone have data on how the cost of solar panels is actually working out in comparison to other forms of energy? I read recently that the price of natural gas has been depressed so the payoff of installing solar panels is taking longer. What is the situation in your part of the country?

Re: Importance of Values in CBSM?

Ken and Elizabeth,
Social marketing can be used for purposes that benefit a particular company or organization. A few years ago when one of the computer manufacturers paid students to "brag" about and recommend their product to other students, they were using the same techniques we employ to spread the values of sustainability. The company's practice was decried by professionals in marketing and public relations as unethical and were generally disclosed.

Hi Kreesta,
Are you familiar with Organic Consumers? www.organicconsumers.org
They have solid info in their newsletter. It may be a good place to start.
Also some of the Transition Towns across the UK and US are doing work in this area.

Taking Action to Reduce Energy Use
2011-02-13 22:09:50 UTC
Who has a recent study on why some people are reluctant to change their energy use behaviors? Alaska wishes to coordinate all the energy efficiency efforts and is focusing on behaviors. Does anyone have ideas on how to reach the recalcitrant folks?

The National Wildlife Federation in Alaska has a long standing program for teens, Alaska Youth for Environmental Action. Teens do real projects. It might be a model worth considering for your effort. The director is Jim Adams, [email protected].

Re: Office Behavior re Energy & Water
2010-12-10 12:38:10 UTC
Hello Jill, I recently developed a program for the University-Medical District in Anchorage,to help the 10 partner organizations develop a culture of sustainability. This included a survey to baseline information on employee attitudes and behaviors, which served to alert employees that a conversation was beginning.
After assessing the situation to learn the current state of employee awareness and institutional measures, I developed a kit for the management team that included: sample policy statements, performance standards for managers and a collateral duty position description for a volunteer Sustainability Champion.
The plan called for me to work with the Sustainability Champions and employee groups offering short presentations at a staff meeting or brown bag session on the topics of energy in the office place; stand by power and lighting efficiency. I can share my slides and talking points with you.
This effort entails working with the public relations and human resources managers to dovetail with their corporate cultures and processes.
Once employee groups take inventory of the number of devices that can be unplugged, turned off, or manipulated in some way (closing blinds etc.) they begin to generate more ideas for energy saving and waste reduction.

Re: Focus Group & Survey Question Examples

Hello Bill,
In the U-Med Green District, which I am helping develop a culture of sustainability, we began with a survey to benchmark attitudes and then planned to have short facilitatied discussions about energy use. I use a simple watt meter to demonstrate how much power various appliances and equipment draw when in standby mode. Example, a shredder draws 20 watts just waiting to be of service. When people learn how much electricity is leaking and running up their bills, they are visibly shocked.
By unplugging my shredder, fax machine and tv monitors along with shutting down computers, I cut my electric use 200 Kw in a month. People take notice of that.
We purchased watt meters to use in demonstrations. Some even calculate costs and savings.
