Renting & Workplace Energy Efficiency Programs
2012-07-31 13:58:48 UTC
We're working on a project trying to gather data around different types of behavior change strategies used in renter and workplace engagement programs for energy efficiency.
Any ideas of organizations or individuals I should reach out to? (Prefer US but will accept Canadian contacts.)
It seems that there are a lot of programs around multi-family upgrades, but little that I can find around local programs around engagement (use of workshops, pledges/commitments, feedback, etc.) for renters. Same with workplace energy efficiency programs.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Using Sculpture to Communicate Recycling
2012-05-31 10:51:29 UTC
Hi Eve,
I just attended a webinar with Keep America Beautiful (kab.org) with Wes Schultz and Julie Colehour.
Julie's group ran a program in King County Washington that really targeted increasing recycling rates by addressing barriers such as the "ick" factor (having to clean containers before recycling) and the convenience factors. Really great work done out there, I'd recommend checking it out. I don't know her personally, so I can't introduce you, but I was very impressed with her presentation and program. Some materials are on this website: http://www.kab.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Symposium2011&printer_friendly=1 towards the bottom under Case Studies. Look for:
Using Social Marketing to Push Recycling to the Next Level in King County [PDF] [Example Video: Quicktime]
Julie Colehour, Principal, Colehour+Cohen
I love the idea of public art as a way to draw attention. Julie's example can also provide some marketing ideas for the action you hope to inspire in your campaign.
Best of luck!

Energy Efficiency for Grocery & Convenience Stores
2012-03-28 11:24:06 UTC
We're working on developing a program that targets rural and/or small grocery stores and convenience stores for easy and cost-effective, but underdeployed, energy saving retrofits.
I'm interested in hearing about utilities, organizations, local units of government who have run any programs that have worked with this audience -OR-
...who have worked with the technologies below:
-Evaporator fan thermostat controls
-Door heater/anti-sweat heater humidity sensors
-Easy LED retrofits for reach-in fridges/freezers
-Night covers over open cases

Re: CBSM & Faith-Based Groups

Hi Theresa,
I just heard about this case study at Doug's workshop last week, might be worth checking out. http://www.cbsm.com/cases/123+campaign+against+global+warming_138
We should stay in touch - I'm over in MN and am potentially looking at doing some faith community CBSM in southern MN.
Good luck!

Re: Getting Started......Ideas?
2011-02-24 11:49:11 UTC
Hi Dan,
Great news! Few tips, and pardon if they are nothing new to you, but they are some best practices I've experienced:
1) Establish a staff level and student level group with liasons... In educational institutions, a lot can get lost in the in-betweens, so having students, faculty, staff, and admin who are either interested, or in your case, whose involvement is crucial to make any changes, all involved in really important. Let the whole campus know these groups exist and what their goals are - then they are held accountable.
2) Here at the University of MN, I see their sustainability work broadly as two-fold: 1) facilities and industry level -- this is where they have achieved incredible savings, 2) campus cultural -- via student, staff, faculty initiatives. These add up to small measures, but the true impact is educational and cultural. I'd be happy to put you in touch with some of the folks here leading these efforts.
3) Partner-up: 1) Talk with other universities in Montana - it's surprising how localized some initiatives can be. Reach out to public and private to gather ideas of what's been working among other Montana institutions. 2) Get serious with your utility about changes you want to make and how they can help you. They have a huge incentive to help bigger institutions - because building new generators is very expensive.
Last bit, in terms of sustainable culture, I'd recommend a new book, "The Nature of College" which explores the concept of campus ecology and how the student experience is both a challenge and an opportunity for developing sustainable habits and practices. It's new out of milkweed publications, by James Farrell
Good luck in your endeavors!

Hi Tiffany,
There's a program that I volunteer with here in Minnesota called Area Youth Network with the org, Great River Greening (http://www.greatrivergreening.org)
They partner with schools in the metro area and do a two step kind of program with the kids. I think what's engaging about it is -- there's education, then actual conservation work alongside mentors (professionals in enviro roles in the community), and then a wrap-up that connects leadership skills they need for their goals to the skills needed for conservation work. This all sounds very nice and sing-songy typed up, but in practice, I've found kids enthusiastic, engaged, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of the volunteer work.
I'd be happy to send you more information (like what the director sends volunteers about the programming) or connect you with Mark Turbak, the program director. It definitely hits home in terms of honing in on attitudes towards stewardship.

Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for the link and materials -- As I go through the case studies, if I have any questions, do know who I can best direct them to?
Thanks!

Re: Sustainable Water Bottles

I know this thread is a couple years old, but wanted to post a program that is a great alternative to 1) plastic, and 2) accumulating more stuff...
http://www.cannedwater4kids.com/
CERTs has a program called Schools Cutting Carbon, and one of our sponsored schools got into this program. They put their logo on it and info about how aluminum is infinitely recyclable, (as opposed to plastic and other materials). They've been a success, $0.50 at football games, other events.
Anyway, just wanted to put it in the thread!
