Examples of Community Recycling Projects
2011-07-18 04:09:32 UTC
I'm hoping to secure some funding to enable me to travel to visit projects where local communities have taken on municipal waste management services from the local authority. Here in the UK we may soon have the opportunity for Community Interest Companies (not for profits) to compete with commercial companies in taking on the contracts for waste management services. So I'm interested to find out how to inspire a community to care about waste and take responsibility for dealing with it. I live in a town with a population of around 20,000 people, in a largely rural area and would like to find similar. All ideas gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi Jo
There's a great book you might find helpful called 'How Bad Are Bananas: the carbon footprint of everything' by Mike Berners-Lee. It provides a really useful comparison of the carbon impact of just about everything you can think of, in a highly accessible and often amusing way. We're planning an interactive workshop in my local community where we collectively identify what we think has the most impact, compared to what really has the most impact (helped by Mike's book and Mike himself as he lives locally) and then figure out how to help people change their behaviour accordingly through a campaign.

Hi Elaine
Perhaps you'd be interested in a project called the 100 Ideas House which was based on the Cultural Dynamics values modes methodology and targeted 'prospectors'. http://www.cse.org.uk/projects/view/1098
Contact ian.preston@cse.org.uk for info about the outcome of the project. I don't think he has quantitative data though and it might not qualify as 'clearly resulting in a significant behaviour change'. But it's an interesting project nevertheless as it targeted an otherwise hard to reach group.
