Re: Encouraging Water Conservation among Tenants in Low-Income Housing
2012-10-19 10:52:33 UTC
In the UK most houses do not have water meters however we still aim not to waste water, be we poor or rich, and this is largely brought about by highlighting the environmental impacts of wasting water and the issues around drought and reservoir levels. this would surely be just as valid in the USA? As to the comments above no one is saying the poor should go without just that we should not waste water, the poor can care about nature as much as the rich.

Re: Divisible and Indivisible Behaviours
2012-10-02 09:38:29 UTC
Surely the point is you need to be aware that the behaviour is divisible so in effect work on it as two behaviours but in one campaign. I think a lot of people think you can only work on one behaviour in one campaign. Its certainly easier if this is what you do but if insulating the loft is 4 behviours and you want to work on all four of them you have to be aware of this. Its no different really to using segmentation and then deciding to target more than one audience who will need differing campaigns to engage them.

Thanks Colin, this is an interesting site but mostly aimed at new build as far as i can tell and buit in building controls,t he offices I am thinking of are mostly in oder buildings, mine dates back to the 1600 in places, and technical fixes are not really very easy to use, its getting staff to make behavior changes I am looking for, regards Jo

Energy Reduction in Offices
2012-01-06 04:55:27 UTC
HI All, I am looking for case studies of behavior change projects that reduced the energy wasted by workers in an office environment by leaving on lights computers, printers etc and, in our office, opening windows and jamming doors open in January rather than turning off their radiators. There seems to be lots on home energy but little on the work environment,
thank you in advance

no progress so far Nicole, always takes us years to get things going, but thanks for the link, I just wish I could remember where I read about that north American project, regards Jo

Re: Barriers to Testing Homes for Radon Gas

you may find this link useful Kim,

also search for projects in Cornwall where radon is a real problem. The mention of confidentiality on these sites may lead us to beleive that people don't want to see their house prices plummet,

Re: Importance of Values in CBSM?
2011-11-07 04:27:25 UTC
Surely the simple definition of social marketing is using marketing techniques for social good. So without the social good it is not social marketing it is just marketing. It is crucial in any planned social marketing intervention that, when designing the campaign, you conduct a risk analysis to consider ethical and moral issues as well as unintended consequences.

Re: Identifying Behaviors that lead to Tree Planting
2011-10-05 09:45:53 UTC
I have found when working with groups on CBSM that in interpreting barriers to indivisable behaviours people then think they can only work on one thing. It just means you have to look at each action to acheive the behaviour but not that you can only plant tulip trees in back yards. So you have to look at the barrier to planting a range of trees but can then work on getting people to plant any of these trees that are suitable for back yards. So you would eliminate some trees, becaue the barriers are insurmountable, such as size of the tree when fully grown and you would eliminate some back yards because of insufficient light to support trees or the wrong sortof soil. Then you would look at the barriers to a single mother planting a suitable tree in her suitable back yard. Once suitable trees are identified then the barriers will be the same for all of those suitable trees I think. You may then look at the barriers for the elderly or the disabled but do not have to work exclusively with one group just to have identified the barriers and hooks for that segment so when you do work with them you can overcome barriers and engage with them. Planting a tree will involve acquiring a suitable tree, getting the tree home, choosing the correct site in the yard, digging the hole, refilling the hole with tree in place, and, if the desired outcome is that the tree thrives, staking the tree, watering the tree until established, maybe protecting the tree with a tree guard, keeping grass and weeds away from the tree while it establishes etc etc. Barriers will be around owning a spade, being physically able to dig the hole, being able to afford the tree etc. hope it helps:¬)

Sustainable Intensification
2011-08-16 05:12:03 UTC
SI is when either you produce more food using the same inputs or the same amount of food using lower inputs, the aim is to decrease the input output ratio by a steady percentage. We are a land owning conservation charity in Wales and we are considering using CBSM to investigate the success of specific interventions and then to promote them using social norms. I recall seeing a project somewhere in North America doing something similar by producing a booklet showcasing inputs and outputs achieved on a dozen or so farms which had adopted low input methods in a locality, does anyone have any details of this or similar projects in the developed world?
