This was a great video! What a creative and clever way to draw attention to food waste. Thanks for sharing it here, Nial.

Re: Apartment Setting Recycling

Hi Bill,
We're in the middle of a project now where we provided two types (tenants chose one) of in-suite recycle containers to encourage sorting and use of the outside recycle dumpsters. Since the project is still taking place, I don't have any results to share yet, but one of our challenges has been measuring the impact of the containers at sites with communal dumpsters. Do you have a plan in place for establishing a baseline and measuring changes against that baseline?
Best,

Hi Max,
Here is a page that lists carbon footprint by appliance (though laptop is not included). You might have to investigate the assumptions behind each, but it might be a good start. There's also a carbon calculator on the site.

Re: Lunch Composting in Secondary Schools

Hi Erin,
I've attached the presentation, which I created as a very basic primer for food scraps collection and composting, geared toward a younger audience. Much of the content is in the slide notes.
Note that the school's science teachers likely made edits to make the presentation their own, which I think is a good idea.

One other note that Ora's post made me think about: At the middle school we worked with, we created a brief (5 slides) presentation on composting (what's compostable, where it goes, how it works) and gave it to the school's science teachers to present and edit as they saw fit. All students take some sort of science class so everyone received the presentation, but in a small classroom setting rather than in a large assembly where distractions can be an issue.

Re: Lunch Composting in Secondary Schools

We have been working with some elementary and middle schools in our area and rolled out lunchroom composting in two schools so far, with a third in the works. We found the following factors increase chances of long-term success:
- Get principal and custodian on board early by identifying THEIR barriers and benefits. They can make/break success of the program.
- Have "expert" staff (from waste hauler, City, or similar group) train anyone who will be a monitor (teachers, principal, custodian, parents, students--whoever) prior to roll out if possible, but definitely for the first 2-3 days of collection. Experts start by leading the monitoring and gradually shift responsibilities to long term monitors, who will likely gain confidence quickly with the expert's help.
- At the schools we've worked with, monitoring is ongoing by the custodian at the middle school and students at the elementary school. Sorting improves greatly after the first 2 weeks.
One thing I'd like to try with middle and high schools is to get teachers or principal to identify students who are well known and well respected, take them aside and teach them proper sorting, and then have them exhibit the behavior among other students. I wouldn't showcase the identified students as examples or call them out, but just let them do the behavior correctly where other students can see them. I'm curious to see if this would decrease overall contamination.
Good luck,
Aldan Shank

Here is the link to a transcript of the webinar that I think Aleah is referring to: http://www.epa.gov/osw/rcc/web-academy/2010/videos/jun/jun10_trans.htm
And this page contains links to the presentations given by the speakers at the webinar: http://www.epa.gov/osw/rcc/web-academy/2010/jun10.htm
If you open the transcript in one window and the presentations in another, you can follow along between narrative and slides pretty easily. The presentations from New York and Chicago are particularly informative for multifamily recycling outreach.
