Does anybody have green policies & procedures brochures or packets for new hires? If so, I would love links to your pdf or webpages as examples.

Hi Randi, check out the Toronto Dominion Centre project lead by Perkins + Will and the recent ACEEE report - http://aceee.org/research-report/b121.
The Duke Energy, Envision Charlotte - Smart Energy Now program will have results through an MIT thesis set to be published in August by Elena Alshuler, who will soon be working for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Re: Sustainable Restaurant Practices

I second the Green Restaurant Association - www.dinegreen.com.
I was once in your position, opening an organic market and deli and I found their framework and directory for cleaners and containers really helpful! They are quite expensive, but I looked at the fee as marketing expense.
My market was the first green restaurant certified establishment in Wisconsin and I received oodles of press for that, which helped bring customers in.
You might want to also consider bring volunteering your restaurant as a CSA pick up point.
Lastly, my interior designer and I followed the LEED checklist when designing the interior. Did not get the space certified, just followed the framework.

Gillette is a participant in the Challenge for Sustainability in Boston and they just rolled out a successful waste engagement pilot where 80% of employees voluntarily turned in their waste bins.
See our sustainability toolkit page, "Engaging Employees around Waste Reduction", including a link to Gillette's presentation (towards bottom of page): http://www.abettercity.org/toolkit/engagementwaste.html

Re: Water Efficiency Outreach Suggestions & Costs
2012-01-26 09:58:22 UTC
Hi Katie,
First of all, kudos to Nevada City!
I would get in touch with Next Step Living of Boston who does a very good job at residential energy. www.nextstepliving.com. Their website is great and residents can sign up for free home walk-throughs online. The technicians come out with CFLs, faucet aerators and lo-flow shower heads ready to install for free. They have the outreach pretty much mastered - Massachusetts was just ranked #1 in the U.S. in terms of energy efficiency and I think they are a huge component of that ranking.
Two items that have an under 3 month payback are:
1. Faucet Aerators
2. Low flow shower heads
They are extremely inexpensive and are as simple to install as screwing in a light bulb. They also have a positive impact on the electric / gas bill because they reduce the amount of hot water needed.
The user experience post aerators and low flow shower heads is also better.
Best of luck!

I run a business / commercial real estate engagement program called the Challenge for Sustainability in Boston and am compiling a list of similar programs in other cities around the world. Here are the ones I know about:
- Denver Energy Challenge
- Better Bricks (Portland)
- Seattle 2030
- Green Office Challenge (Chicago, Houston)
- St Louis Green Business Challenge

Re: Cab Ride Policy
2011-12-06 16:55:07 UTC
Hi Jeanette,
thanks for this, but I wasn't referring to a Guaranteed or Emergency Ride Home policy, but rather, a policy to deter employees from taking cabs when they travel between meetings or for business travel.
Similar to management approval for thermostat temperature changes, I want management approval for cab rides so it's not considered an automatic benefit, therefore employees have to take mass transit whenever possible.
