Focus Group Planning - Looking for lessons learned?
2012-07-18 11:01:04 UTC
Hi there! Cumberland is in the early stages of researching local barriers to residential tree planting. In just under 2 weeks we are holding our first Focus Group following the recommendations by CBSM.
We also have a great community survey live right now that is getting many respondents!! You can check our survey out at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...Z1bWc6MQ#gid=0 .
Have any of your organizations conducted a focus group recently, and if so what were lessons learned? What would you have done differently? What questions worked/what questions didn't work?
Our plans for our focus group are to provide dinner and an incentive ($), in a comfortable environment. Our agenda includes a thought envoking slide show, 4 discussion questions, and a closing thought envoking slideshow. We will collect the data by recording, note taking, and by collecting the structured slideshow notes from the group.
Thank you for any last-minute recommendations that we can include in our activity!!!

Re: Urban Greening ... Urban Forestry

I am working in an Eastern US City on our tree project - studying tree planting barriers. As part of our Focus Group, We would like to evoke emotional responses through photographs. Would you have any photos available showing properties without trees, then photoshopped in trees? Have you used this photo technique in your focus groups?
Would anyone have any photographs to share with us? We are hoping to use several through a power point - and verbal response.
Thanks,
Raquel

Re: Intern Hiring Pointers

I believe you hit the nail on the head about needing a particular personality type. This project has the best opportunity to be successful if we can recruit the right personality. I would be very interested in such list of questions. We do intend on doing interviews so we can personally assess!
Thank you!

Intern Hiring Pointers
2012-03-14 11:07:18 UTC
Our City (Cumberland, MD) has been awarded a grant to do some public outreach in regards to tree planting on private property. That is the good news, but I have a challenge ahead to pick out a great intern to assist us with the research part of our program.
We are using the CBSM http://www.cbsm.com/public/world.lasso model and am expected to hire an intern to get into our community and identify barriers to residential tree planting. Once the barriers are identified, we will design a pilot program to address those barriers.
What I am in particular need of right now is a template job description for the intern position. Our local DNR office mentioned that instead of reinventing the wheel why not contact other professionals that may have already conducted an outreach program that requires intern hiring.
Its a long shot, but would anyone have such a job description example?
thank you, Raquel

Identifying Behaviors that lead to Tree Planting
2011-10-04 14:18:43 UTC
I recently attended a workshop on CBSM. The information and concept is amazing and can be applied locally. I am trying to sharpen up on one of the earliest steps in the process - identifying the non-divisible/end-state behavior.
Our program is to increase residential tree planting
To simply get to planting a tree, folks must consider the planting area, appropriate size of tree for the area, select tree species, and finally plant the tree.
I am challenged by selecting the non-divisible/end-state behavior. Would the behavior simply be:
Plant a tree - is a divisible behavior that can be further broken down in to the process required above
Plant a Tulip Poplar tree - is more specific, but there is still selection of the planting area
Plant a Tulip Poplar tree in backyard - even more specific
After coming to the final behavior (direct action), I am challenged with coming up with other behaviors (other than listing other tree species/planting locations).
Could someone who has successfully gone through the process of selecting behaviors please critique my outline above in order to help me move through the CBSM process for the first time.
Thank you.
