My work includes implementing an outreach strategy that fosters behaviour change in apartment and condo dwellers living in Edmonton as we introduce source separated food scraps collection.

Sorting Organic Waste Commitment
2025-04-16 03:03:11 UTC
Hey!
We are running a new campaign this summer and are looking for different ways of providing a commitment and norming organics sorting behaviour. Cart stickers often come up but using the cart is norming that behaviour already plus a few other concerns I have about stickers. Do any other municipalities use cart stickers or anything else that is working well? For our Apartment and Condo organics sorting program we use a poster with stickers in a central area in the building for all residents to see (mail room, garbage room, community bullitin board etc). Detached homes is where we are brain storming. -

Thanks Julie! Yes we will gain the barriers and benefits from conversations with residents who do not get a gold star. We generally have an idea of perceived and real barriers and benefits from the cart implementation and our current Communal Food scraps and Recycling sorting rollout. We are also doing some broader scale data collection. So this project will be the 'Pilot', let's try it! The part we are missing is how do we know we were effective. We will have to go back and check but this is definitly a multi-year or continuous program. -
Curbside 'gold star'/'good job' Campaign

I was wondering how other municipalities implemented this type of program using CBSM. Our plan is to audit to gain data, stick stickers on carts that are sorting correctly (food scraps/recycling), place an oops tag on carts that are not sorting at all or high contamination. We will then use this data to chat with residents about how to use their carts and the waste system properly, using one small asks and auditing if the change has occurred. The durable commitment will look like a verbal commitment 'can I count on you to?' with positive reinforcement for those sorting correctly/using their cart.
