North American Social Marketing Conference 2026
2026-04-27 21:40:56 UTC
On October 1-3, social marketers from across North America will descend on my hometown, Victoria, BC, to attend the North American Social Marketing Conference 2026. NASMC 26 will illustrate how social marketing is being applied to complex challenges across health, environment, and safety. The conference program is built around sharing what works, what doesn’t, and what comes next, with a focus on approaches that can be adapted, scaled, or transferred into practice.
NASMC has a strong track record of bringing people together who go on to collaborate, partner, and develop new projects. Whether you’re looking to exchange ideas, find collaborators, or expand your professional network, the conference creates the conditions for meaningful connection.
This is not a passive conference. It is a working space for testing ideas, sharing lessons, and engaging with others who are tackling similar challenges. You’ll leave with practical insight, fresh perspectives, and a clearer sense of how to strengthen your own work. The conference includes three tracks: environment, health, and safety. The environmental track explores how social marketing can contribute to environmental sustainability and support behavior change in response to climate and ecological challenges. The health track focuses on the role of social marketing in improving health outcomes, enhancing wellbeing, and addressing the broader determinants of health. Finally, the safety track examines how social marketing can be applied to improve safety outcomes across a range of settings and populations. It focuses on preventing harm, reducing risk, and promoting behaviors that protect individuals and communities. If you'd like to learn more or possibly present at the conference, you can learn more here. I hope to see you in Victoria in early October!Victoria Harbor, Shutterstock -

Hi Lucia, I have sent detailed instructions to yourself and your colleague several times and asked that you confirm receipt. I suspect that these emails have gone into your spam folder. I am resending them now, can you confirm receipt and if you did not receive them can you provide another email address that I can send them to? The workshop begins at 10:30 am NZ time on all three days and runs for 4 hours and 15 minutes on each day. The Zoom link is: https://zoom.us/j/96347995763 There are more details in the email so I want to ensure that you receive the email as well. Best, Doug -

Hi Shuli, In addition to Julie's suggestions, I would encourage you to look not only at impact, but also at adoption, probability and applicability in deciding which behaviors to foster. Impact, by itself, is only part of the story and it needs to be combined with other factors to fully appreciate which behaviors are worth promoting. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, please see the second chapter of Fostering Sustainable Behavior.
Hope this helps, Doug -

Invitation to Publish Social Marketing Case Studies
2019-09-03 04:25:06 UTC
Chahid Farouli and Jeff French are editing, and Palgrave is publishing the Encyclopedia of Social Marketing. One of the five sections include Applications and significant social marketing example programmes that Dr. Bo Pang and I will edit. We intend to publish 50 strong social marketing case studies of 2-3,000 words each that display presence of a tangible product or an intangible service and strong evaluation. Otherwise, we are open to any context (in terms of social issue, behaviour, target audience, or culture). We invite students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners to email me ([email protected]) by September 6, 2019, title of the initiative and related website or report and whether you would be interested in writing that case (deadline for the first draft will be December 31, 2019). Once we finalize the list of case studies, we will invite you to write the case and provide further details. We highly appreciate if you could share our request in your networks! Thanks for your help,

Linking Social Norms to Efficient Conservation Investment in Payments for Ecosystem Services
2010-07-28 16:08:01 UTC
An increasing amount of investment has been devoted to protecting and restoring ecosystem services worldwide. The efficiency of conservation investments, including payments for ecosystem services (PES), has been found to be affected by biological, political, economic, demographic, and social factors, but little is known about the effects of social norms at the neighborhood level. As a first attempt to quantify the effects of social norms, we studied the effects of a series of possible factors on people’s intentions of maintaining forest on their Grain-to-Green Program (GTGP) land plots if the program ends. GTGP is one of the world’s largest PES programs and plays an important role in global conservation efforts. Our study was conducted in China’s Wolong Nature Reserve, home to the world-famous endangered giant pandas and >4,500 farmers. We found that, in addition to conservation payment amounts and program duration, social norms at the neighborhood level had significant impacts on program re-enrollment, suggesting that social norms can be used to leverage participation to enhance the sustainability of conservation benefits from PES programs. Moreover, our results demonstrate that economic and demographic trends also have profound implications for sustainable conservation. Thus, social norms should be incorporated with economic and demographic trends for efficient conservation investments.
