I have a particular interest in how we effectively promote the purchase of environmentally friendly products. There are two resources at the FSB site on this issue. The Our Water- Our World (OWOW) program works in collaboration with water agencies, counties in the San Francisco Bay area (California), and retail hardware and nursery stores that sell pesticides to the public- to promote purchasing of "less toxic" pesticides. Each store in our program makes available to the public over 20 fact sheets (English/Spanish) that offer less-toxic pest management strategies for specific pests. Shelf-talkers are also placed on selected products on store shelves to make it easier for the public to identify safer alternatives to conventional pesticides. In addition, community outreach/educational events are held in the stores to promote the availability of less toxic methods and products, training of store personnel is given and consists of principles of integrated pest management (IPM) and successful application strategies and sales techniques for less toxic products. http://www.ourwaterourworld.com The website has been developed to assist consumers in managing home and garden pests in a way that helps protect Our Water - Our World. Among other things, this site offers: assorted fact sheets on specific pests and methods to manage them without using hazardous materials. information on where to buy safer alternatives to pesticides, including fungicides and herbicides. an alphabetized list of some (not all) products that are considered safer alternatives to more conventional pesticides. a list of products sorted by the pest it targets. an Ask the Expert feature (for California residents only) that allows you to ask a specific question and receive a personal reply
