I am in the process of working on an employee in-reach strategy for energy conservation. I would appreciate any feedback or information on existing programs that have proven to be successful. Specifically programs to engage municipal staff for a corporation that employs approximately 1800. If anyone has facilitated a similar program and is interested/able to share their findings, I would appreciate the assistance.

Dear Tim,
Great to hear City of Kingston are embarking on this. I reside and work in Bentleigh - City of Glen Eira so not far away. I have some experience with this sort of thing from initiating BP Australia's Green Office Program several years ago. At that time, BP had around 1100 staff. The program was a success which transferred globally. It included energy efficiencies and heavily focussed on employee involvement, awareness, a structured education program and consultation. I am tied up until Tuesday next week if you would like to chat over a cuppa.
Kind regards,

Hi Gay and Tim,
Are you interested in training staff to reduce their home energy use as a staff development exercise, or are you looking for energy use reductions in the workplace? I work on Community Projects and the Household Program at Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd (MEFL), a community based not-for-profit organisation that delivers energy efficiency programs for householders, community groups and businesses. Most of the work we do is based in Moreland and free for Moreland residents/businesses, however we also do some external consultancy and fee for service work, including delivering training for other organisations. In the past we have delivered our Home Energy Action training, which provides participants with practical skills for improving the energy efficiency of their own homes, to employees of various councils and to corporations like Toyota; the training consists of two x 2-hour workshops, materials and follow up assistance. We also do more general talks and workshops, and run a one-day course called Introduction to Energy Management (more appropriate for project officers who will be conducting audits themselves - useful if you want to audit Council/company facilities etc.
For more info see http://www.mefl.com.au/documents/Training_brochure.doc). If you would like more info on any of this, or have general energy-related questions, feel free to drop me an email or give me a buzz on 9381 1722.
Good luck with your in-reach efforts!

Tim,
When I implemented a similar strategy it was in the UK and with a larger authority but this might help: We basically approached the program like a competition between departments. They all received a basic information session and a kit that would help them carry out a mini energy use survey in their offices or facility. They then went through a work pack that helped them to identify ways to conserve energy. Teams would earn points for reduction of energy use and they cold also loose points if they were caught wasting energy. - This led to some good natured 'raids' on each others offices exposing computers that were left on, excessive lighting use etc. In the end we even developed a meter on our intranet that showed how much energy was used by each department of the municipality, how many times each department had been 'caught' by another department and a monthly winning department who would receive energy efficiency goodies to take home.

Tim Take a look at this site http://www.sustainablecommunities.ca/Capacity_Building/Energy/Municipal_Buil ding_Retrofit_Guide/ for the retrofit side and while I do not have the link the following publication should be of use for your purpose: " Energy Efficiency Planning And Management Guide"
NRCan Canadian Industrial Program for Energy Conservation says it all for managing a building program for energy effectiveness. Good luck,
