Hello everyone,
I am developing and designing a corporate de-icing salt reduction program. To complement the work that has been done to reduce road salt on our transportation networks, we are interested in reducing de-icing salt applications from the industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) sectors. I would like to make contact with others who have looked or are looking into this issue. Particularly, we are interested in any research that has been done on the following:
- Regulatory options
- Behaviour change programs
- Measuring/estimating ICI salt application rates
- Efforts to minimize the liability barrier (ie. insurance claim risks)
We have initiated some projects and research and would be willing to share our data as well.
Thanks for your help.
Leanne

Hi Leanne,
If you aren't already familiar with RiverSides Stewardship Alliance, check out their work on these issues: http://www.riversides.org/review/riversides/low_salt_diet.htm (includes links to resources and publications). BTW, they produced 2 public education brochures last winter that you may find useful, which I believe are available from the site above. Here is a link to the Env. Canada BMP guide (http://www.ec.gc.ca/nopp/roadsalt/reports/ParkingLot/EN/ToC.cfm) for parking lots and private properties, which RiverSides' Jennifer Hounsell provided me when I contacted her on this subject a few months ago
FYI, I cc'd her on my post to the CBSM list to give her a heads-up about your interest in this area; her contact info is:
