This group in Yucatan Mexico works with the community on sustaining local biodiversity. I am not sure if they directly work with Turtles, but they would certainly know others in Mexico and perhaps the Caribbean that do. Amigos de Sian Ka'an (Friends of Sian Ka'an ) I have provided the link here. http://www.amigosdesiankaan.org/a_Intro/marco_ing_intro.html

Suggest you contact Dr. Serge Dedina at http://www.wildcoast.net/ [email protected] 619-423-8530
Although their webpage shows their broad focus, they started with protected turtles along the Baja California peninsula.

2 things come to mind
1 dont use the word slaughter - it is quite loaded
2 contact the Marine and Coastal Community Network in Australia who should have information about turtle conservation

There is similar work being undertaken in Fiji with local villages and their chiefs. Try contacting someone at Kula eco-Park for a lead into this work.
