I am seeking pictures, that can be used for educational purposes (i.e. brought into a classroom), of materials pulled out of landfills. Specifically, I am hoping to be able to show students pictures of partially decomposed or undecomposed materials: old hot dog, head of lettuce, old newspaper, etc.

2 or 3 years ago the Ministry for The Environment in New Zealand ran a "Reduce Your Rubbish Campaign". They had newspaper & television advertising. One television ad showed a couple of people finding an old childrens book at the landfill & tracked down the owner from the name & address inside the cover. Of course the owner was now a senior citizen & the book was still readable after 40 or so years buried. The website is still running & may have pictures & maybe the ads available: www.reducerubbish.govt.nz

You might be familiar with the work that William Rathje has done in excavating landfills and finding what has or hasn't decomposed. Here's a link to a book he's written related to the archeology of garbage. He's written many articles on this and I would think would have lots of pictures. I believe he is still at the University of Arizona. http://www.uapress.arizona.edu/books/bid1369.htm
Good luck and Best Regards,
