Apologies for cross-posting. We are planning to install some pathways around our campus and would like to consider an environmentally preferable alternative to asphalt. It needs to be a hard surface for snow-clearing purposes. If you have any recommendations, it would be much appreciated!

Scrap rubber can be used for road pavements and I assume also pathways. See "Asphalt Rubber Design and Construction Guidelines. Volume 1 Design Guidelines", Northern California Rubberized Asphalt Concrete Technology Centre and California Integrated Waste Management Board, Sacramento. (2002).

It sounds like you should look into some type of pervious or porous pavement. There are many styles on the market. Uni Eco-Stone is one brand that has shaped stones atop layers of drain stone which facilitate infiltration and are quite decorative. There are others that look similar to asphalt that will allow water to run through. Do a search on pervious or porous pavement and you will come up with a plethora of choices.
