I would be interested in reading about any programmes undertaken by others in Local Government in support of the "Buy Nothing Day" on Nov 24th / 25th.
Many Thanks

Here in Portland, Oregon, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is now Buy Local Day, with an official proclamation by Mayor Tom Potter. I think this effort is probably, in large part, due to the success of Buy Nothing Day over the years here in the Pacific Northwest, as well as people's interest in and understanding of the importance of supporting local business. For more information visit The Sustainable Business Network of Portland's Think Local First website - http://www.thinklocalportland.org/ "Buy Local Day--Saturday, November 25, 2006 This is the best time of year to make Portlanders aware of the important role they play in our local economy. Mayor Tom Potter has officially proclaimed the Saturday of Thanksgiving Weekend, Nov. 25th as BUY LOCAL DAY. From now until the end of December, SBNP's Think Local First campaign will be focusing on educating the public about the importance of "Thinking Independently and Shopping Locally-Owned" this holiday season. Many businesses are offering special promotions to encourage folks to patronize their businesses."

There's several organizations in the US that support a boycott of BlackFriday, the retail nightmare the friday after thanksgiving. They are not, however, government agencies.
