Hi Lucille
Germany has a country-wide food recycling program. I googled "food recycling Germany" and got several links, the first of which is this one (in English): http://www.howtogermany.com/pages/recycling.html which has a good overview and several links from it.

The City of Burnside in Adelaide, South Australia conducted a food waste collection & composting trial (however this was one local government area, not across a whole city). www.burnside.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/media_release_web_version ..pdf www.burnside.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=1091 www.burnside.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Bio_Basket_Trial_Outcomes ..pdf www.burnside.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Burnside_Bio_Basket_Q_A_s _final.pdf

Im not sure where you are from, But it is an initiative that is continuing to spread like a wildfire through Ontario, Canada right now! Guelph, ontario was one of the firsts i believe, followed by most others. The small rural town im from, Georgina is getting ready to intraduce the program as well.
Best of luck to you!

Lismore City in New South Wales, Australia (population about 40,000) deals with all its putrescibles and other green waste, including that of the hinterland in a 100 km radius around, by putting it through a huge worm farm. The worm castes are fortified with trace elements which are short in their landcsape and these are then sold to the surrounding farms as agricultural fertiliser, closing the nutrition loop from farm to mouth and back to farm again. Wellington City (capital of New Zealand), combines sewerage with the green waste stream in a controlled composting system which generates compost that meets organic certification standards and is sold all over the country.

All food waste on Prince Edward Island has been source separated and composted since 2002. This includes residential, and ICI food waste. This is a mandatory source separation program using vented plastic carts. You can find out more at www.iwmc.pe.ca
