Hi -
I am looking for any working examples of small(ish) scale energy from waste projects (anaerobic digestion and gasification); industrial, agricultural or municipal. I am investigating if and how these processes can be applied to zoo waste (i am an ex zookeeper) for biogas and energy production, and the potential resultant greenhouse gas savings.
many thanks

Hello Rupert:
Our company helps market the greenhouse gas reductions into the US voluntary market, which brings funding to the farmers to increase financial feasibility. We do not design nor build the digesters. We've supported 4 farms to date. Greenhouse gases from zoo animal waste may vary substantially from cows, as the methane generation is diet related and a function of the manure storage. At this stage in the US, most systems require dairy herds in ranges above 400 animals to keep return on investment periods under 6-7 years even with government grants. We have been attempting to work with a modular digester for 100 herd farms: http://www.avatarenergy.com/. You can get some info on the UA EPA AgStar site as well: http://www.epa.gov/agstar/.
Hi Rupert,
Have a look at the following web site for a report about a small biogas system that was installed at a pig farm at Ballarat in central Victoria. The plant has now operated successfully for several years. http://epanote2.epa.vic.gov.au/EPA/Publications.NSF/2f1c2625731746aa4a25 6ce90001cbb5/43c646e11eaef07b4a256a17001e7f8e/$FILE/20025-REP-IE-1.pdf

Over your way, check out Panda Waste north of Dublin. They compost mixed C&D/MSW aerobically, dry the compost using the heat generated by composting, then screen and pelletize the solids. Last I visited them (2005), they were planning to sell the pellets as carbon neutral biofuel.
