I am seeking examples of campaigns that have been effective in getting youth, from 10-18 years old, to engage in sustainable behavior. Although my program is transportation-focused, I am interested in ANY programs that have successfully encouraged youth 10-18 to change behavior. At this time, I'm not working with kids younger than 10 or older than 18. The specific program I'm developing will target middle-schoolers (age 10-14) and encourage them to choose sustainable transportation options such as riding the bus, biking, walking, carpooling, etc. Preliminary plans include two interlinked components, a "Climate Challenge" and an ambassador program where youth learn to ride transit, then encourage peers to do so.
Thanks!

The program described below may be of interest.
Active & Safe Routes to School is a national program that encourages the use of active modes of transportation to and from school. Active Transportation uses "human power" for movement - like walking, cycling, in-line skating, skiing, skating, skateboarding, wheel chairing, non-motorized scooters and even more. http://www.goforgreen.ca/asrts/home_e.html
Green Communities Active & Safe Routes to School is a comprehensive community-based initiative that taps into the increasingly urgent demand for safe, walkable neighbourhoods. Active & Safe Routes to School promotes the use of active and efficient transportation for the daily trip to school, addressing health and traffic safety issues while taking action on air pollution and climate change.

Erin,
I have used NESEA's (Northeast Sustainable Energy Assoc.) Getting Around Clean & Green for middle school. They also have high school and grade school level materials. You can access them here: http://www.nesea.org/education/edmaterials/index.html

Hi Erin
Arthur Orsini of Urban Thinkers (Arthur Orsini ) has been commissioned to organise the Ywalk Forum ( http://www.toronto.ca/walk21/ywalk.htm ) taking place in Toronto in early October he is also after success stories in transportation around the same age group maybe you and he can share / swap ideas. I would strongly recommend you check out the Toronto event as it will showcase examples of youth involvement from across the world. For five years, I project managed Young TransNet (YTN) a suite of internet resources that gathered data on how young people got to school. This data could be shared with local authorities and central government to lobby for improvements in youth travel. YTN has gone through a number of morphs but still persists you can find out about here: http://www.youngtransnet.com/ Rhian Barnes is Play Englands Places to Go officer ( rhian barnes ) also looking at young peoples travel and access to child-friendly environments she is seconded from Sustrans, they have tonnes of free resources you can download including lots of examples of youth travel especially in terms of cycling: http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ I make my living out of advising clients like yourselves on youth transport, child friendly environments and stuff ( http://www.rethinkingcities.net/futures/) so I would be very happy to assist you further, but I recognise that this isnt the place to tout for business.. Theres a wealth of information available it is more a case of working out what will be effective for the audiences you wish to reach, and what you are trying to achieve. Happy to help.
Kind regards,
Andrew
