Every reference I can find on sizing domestic hot water heaters says 20 gal per person, even sites that promote water conservation. This seems like a ridiculously high estimate. In a water efficient house with an efficient dishwasher and washing machine, aerators on all faucets, trickle valves on all showers and with residents who minimize hot water usage for showers and sink activities, my calculations indicate 10 gallons per person is sufficient. Does anyone know of any research or recommendations out there that are in line with this.
Thank you,
Danny

Union Gas has a sizing chart with recommendations that are in line with 10 gallons per person. You can see their chart at http://www.uniongas.com/residential/naturalgasproducts/waterheater/rentbuytips.asp.
