We have done some thermostat design -- for example getting rid of the mercury switch which is in many mechanical thermostats. BTW the mercury is sealed safely in the 'stat until it gets crushed at end of life. Anyhow, houses with several 'stats tend to have zone heating, and my understanding of the idea is that the furnace can keep the basement at one temp while the second floor is at another. To do this all 'stats connect to a single controller in or near the furnace. There are older systems where they are chained together and you can get really weird operation if the settings conflict. A brief search showed that Honeywell makes a wireless Chronotherm, but this would require a new controller for the furnace for the three 'stats to talk to. There may be good sustainability material here but feel free to e-mail me directly and I can probably get more detailed info.
