Hello everyone,
I am looking for information on two topics related to organic waste management
1) Unbiased studies (preferably peer-reviewed) comparing composting, anaerobic digestion, landfill, and incineration of organic waste in exhaustive life cycle analyses.
2) The comparison of different textile covers and biofilter layers for aerated static piles on odor, ammonia and VOC emissions and pathogen kill. Here again, I would appreciate unbiased third-party studies.
Thank you!

Hello Karen,
You need US EPA Study EPA530-R-02-006 for the United States (A Life-Cycle Assessment of Emissions and Sinks) or for Canada Final Report, Contract No. K2216-04-0006 (Determination of the Impact of Waste Management Activities on Greenhouse Gas Activities). If you can't find them online by Googling the terms, send me a private email at [email protected] and I'll send you copies.

Have you tried the Composting Council of Canada? They may have such studies, or if not, may be able to direct you to some. http://www.compost.org/englishoverview.html

A study is currently underway, sponsored by the California Integrated Waste Management Board. It is comparing lifecycle impacts for various methods of managing organic wastes.
