Hi Folks,
I'm working with a few small municipalities in south-eastern New Brunswick on energy conservation planning. I'm looking for ways to motivate and provide incentives to municipal employees to adopt "smart driving" approaches and ensure proper maintenance, such as regular checking of tire pressure, in order to cut down on fuel consumption. I've looked through the CBSM website and found a few related sources but would appreciate any other suggestions from the list. In particular any experience integrating these behaviours into unionized workplaces (in this case CUPE).

Hi,
I received the following in an email a few weeks ago, and saved it because I thought it was a great idea! Please be advised that effective March 1, 2008, the mileage reimbursement rate for OPSEU members will be adjusted to encourage carpool arrangements while traveling on union business. The new rate will be as follows:
* 0.45/km if driving alone
* 0.50/km if driving with 1 OPSEU member as a passenger
* 0.55/km if driving with 2 OPSEU members as passengers
* 0.60/km if driving with 3 OPSEU members as passengers
* 0.65/km if driving with 4 OPSEU members as passengers

I wonder if a program like the Bay Areas Commuter Checks program would be of interest to you: http://www.accorservicesusa.com/employers/commutercheckoffice/overview.aspx Its essentially a system that employers can participate in whereby they offer discounts on public transportation (and bridge tolls, I believe) to their employees as a job benefit.

NRCan's Office of Energy Efficiency has been offering Auto$mart driver education programs for many years now. Some of the training is directed at both private and public fleets and their drivers (trucking, coach and school bus companies.
