Hello all Is there anyone on the listserv who can advise on the appropriate, most sustainable way to deal with alkaline and rechargeable batteries at the end of their useable life? The instructions on the battery packet advise us to dispose of them thoughtfully... We do go through a few in our society and I've often thought as I drop them in the bin what the implications of their disposal may be... Very keen to find out the best way to deal with the problem.

Hope all is well? Just saw your post about batteries. The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council has set up a battery recycling programme which started in schools and is now in the process of being widened to more public places so that the general public can be encouraged to properly dispose of batteries rather than putting them into the bulk waste stream. The EMRC is looking into recycling at the moment but is also doing this separate collection so that batteries can be better disposed of in special sealed units of the landfill. In Victoria, Sustainability Victoria provide the 'Batteryback' free battery recycling service for household batteries - http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/www/html/2400-batteryback.asp?intSi teID=4 Not sure if they have the same thing in WA but it would be worth contacting your local council to see if they know of any local programs.

Marketplace is a television program of the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation). They did a story on this issue not too long ago. Here is a link to the episode: http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/batteries_not_included/ One of their findings was that many North Americans are not aware of the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) and its retailer drop-off boxes. Many retailers themselves were not aware that they are supposed to accept rechargeable batteries for recycling.
