As part of a Carbon + TDM best practices project, I'm looking at how employers deal with the employee transportation component of their corporate carbon footprints. I'd appreciate answers to, or resources for, any of these questions:
*How much of a typical downtown/office business' carbon footprint is from employee commuting?
*What methods are employers using to track their carbon footprints that captures employee commuting?
*What climate messages are employers using to encourage employees to reduce their transportation footprints?
*What voluntary "best practices" are employers using to cut their employees' transportation footprints?
*Is anyone working on a LEED-style rating system for employer transportation policies and practices?
Thanks for your help,
Peter Hurley

Pollution Probe in Toronto organizes the "Clean Air Commute" - an event that runs every June and encourages employers to join up and encourage their employees to participate. Employees are asked to try to make changes in their commute behaviour for one week, and they track this information on a diary card. At the end of the week, the employees submit their cards (which indicate the amount of pollutants that they have prevented through their behaviour) and companies can tally how much carbon that week has been prevented from release. We haven't launched this year's commute, but you can check out last year's website www.pollutionprobe.org/2007CAC/. In terms of a LEED-style rating system - Green Fleets BC has a fleet rating program for commercial businesses called E3 Fleets http://www.e3fleet.com/mc/page.do. While it is intended for fleet managers, you could perhaps use it as a piece of your own general rating system. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the Clean Air Commute

HOK is doing "go barefoot" for Earth Day. We'll be tracking our carbon footprint before and then again on Earth day: http://www.thegreenworkplace.com/2008/04/go-barefoot-day-at-hok.html
