Hello,

I'm getting started on research on plastic bag bans/reduction initiatives, particularly in other Canadian jurisdictions. I'd like to put together a short synopsis of what is happening in Canada. I also want to focus on a few examples of particularly successful initiatives, whether in Canada or not, looking at:

-what was the scope of the initiative, i.e. what products were targeted for reduction and to which communities/provinces/states/nations did the initiative apply?

-what techniques were used, e.g. bag tax, outright ban, cloth bag promotion, other techniques (especially those with a CBSM approach)?

-what groups were involved across the public and private sectors?

-was legislation always necessary or are there some voluntary initiatives that have achieved as much success as "carrot + stick" or just "stick" approaches?

I'm also interested in examples of legislation where it has been used in these initiatives. Though I've just begun this research, from Google alerts alone I can tell that there's plenty of material out there. However, I thought people on this list probably have a fair amount of experience in this area, and might be able to suggest some particularly successful initiatives.

Thanks,
Ryan Conway,
