This list-serv has been awesome in providing answers in the past, and I'm hoping you all can help me again. The hospital green team I work with in Boston is looking to put together a list of "best practices" for *behavioral changes *students/staff members can make to reduce energy use and waste. We already have a really good team working on the more technical stuff - changing light fixtures, getting more renewable energy, etc. This particular project is to find out maybe a good 10 or 12 behavioral actions that each area of the medical center can adopt to be a little more environmentally friendly (like turning lights off and biking to work). Does anyone have a good list of hospital-specific behaviors, or know of a website or sites I can visit to find some? I was hoping maybe to get a list of 10 things that doctors can do, 10 things that medical students can do, 10 things administrators can do, etc. Any thoughts?

There has been some really good stuff done on waste (crica 2002) at hospitals in Western Australia. Try contacting St John of God hospital. (http://www.sjog.org.au/portal/page?_pageid=415,138099&_dad=portal&_sche ma=PORTAL&p_division=SUBIACO) I know the Subiaco & Murdoch sites were doing some really progressive stuff (e.g. they had a massive worm farm to process food waste) a while back & i'm sure they would have built on this. You'll have to get in touch with them directly to find the contacts for this area as there isn't much stuff on their site about it. Also have a look through http://www.zerowastewa.com.au/ to see if you can find anything.

Hi Dave,
University Health Network in Toronto (we are comprised of three large teaching hospitals) is piloting a comprehensive behaviour change and employee engagement strategy in the hospital setting. We are about 3/4 of the way through the first year of a three year program so we are still testing, monitoring and evaluating to determine what works best. However the behaviours we have started with in the clinical out-patient and office areas are as follows
Turn off lights when not in use
Turn off computers and monitor at the end of the day
Turn off personal appliances (radios, fans, heaters) when not in use
Turn off common office equipment at the end of the day (faxes, photocopiers etc)
Turn off lights in common areas when vacant
provide your energy saving ideas to our program. We have been working very hard to brand this initiative, and identify barriers to change. I would be more than happy to exchange information with you off the listserve to give you more details about what we are doing and I would be very keen to learn about your activities too!

The University of Wisconsin Extension Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center (SHWEC) has a couple of people working with hospitals in Wisconsin. This work focuses on reducing the pollution that is specific to the healthcare industry.
