Power company enlists kids to be "climate cops"
Dear Friend,
If the tree-hugging, save-the-planet zealots have their way, the idiocy of global warming will not only be a matter of unquestionable scientific fact, the policies that "protect" the earth from global warming will be a matter of law - and those laws will be enforced with an iron rigidity. If you want a chilling preview of what the future may look like if the environmentalist nut jobs gain the control they seek, get a load of this story from Great Britain. A new Web campaign by a British power company seeks to enlist kids as "Climate Cops" to actively keep watch over their parents and neighbors, and keep track of any "energy crimes" they commit. Kids policing their parents? It's a Stalinist dream come true. The site lures kids aged seven to 11 in with games, badges, and cartoons, and then actually prompts the children to investigate family and friends, and then, according to the website, "build your 'Climate Crime Case File' and report back to your family to make sure they don't commit those crimes (or else)!" The "crimes" that this new legion of planet-loving Communist Youth are supposed to report on include using the wrong light bulbs (heaven forbid!), leaving the water running too long, and - you'll love these - putting hot food in the refrigerator (theoretically because it will require the fridge to have to run longer to cool this food down), and running the clothes dryer on a sunny day! Coming soon to your neighborhood - government mandated clotheslines! (Don't laugh; it could be closer than you think if a certain senator is elected this November!) I know what you're thinking: "Calm down, Dr. D! This is just an innocent attempt by the power company to get kids involved in being a little more environmentally conscious - you're making too much of this." Well, I don't think so. I'm not the only one to see the disturbing similarities between this "Climate Cops" campaign and the way the communists encouraged children to report their parents for "crimes against the state." Thankfully, some Brit bloggers have been waging their own grass-roots online campaign against this power company's website. The author of the EU Referendum blog wrote that the kids were being turned into a "network of spies and informers."
>From a list serve on alternative medicine, authored by a "Dr. Douglas." Note his leap from the program's intent which is to have kids remind their parents of things they could do better to having kids turn their parents in to the some sort of state energy police. It seems so bizarre I could not resist passing it along.
I've long contended that neo-fascists of the 21st century come not from the right of the political spectrum, but the left. The left has already promoted their own version of Orwell's "Thought Police" with the "political correctness" movement; so it's not a major leap for the left to want to indoctrinate the young and create their own "little league Gestapo" to enforce their whacked-out environmentalist agenda. At the end of the day, the environmentalist agenda is less about saving the planet and more about grabbing as much government power and control as possible. And in this case, they're starting with the children. But there could be a backlash - I went to the npower Climate Cops website after hearing about this story - and it wasn't working. So maybe folks in Britain can again dare to put warm leftovers in the fridge without fear of reprisal!

I would say I have to agree with Lisha on this one. I have seen a school project where the students were taught about sustainability and the benefits of turning power off at the switch, they were then awarded with lanyards and a small card that distinguished them as energy wise, this gave them the authority to check class rooms to ensure switches were off. These students are now taking home these habits and yes they may have some sort of authority but with that authority they have education and reasoning behind their actions, they are now teaching the wider community what they have learnt and helping to create change toward more sustainable practices. I see this as a good thing, these students will carry these habits on through their lives and if change is to happen it needs to come from everyone not just the adults and parents, what is the harm in a child saying 'mum why don't you turn the light off if you're not in the room? We can save some money on electricity and help the environment'

I'd like to thank Mel and Lisha for bringing the site to my attention. It's at http://www.climatecops.com/ and the stuff some people appear to have taken exception to is at: http://www.climatecops.com/downloads/climate_cops_crime_cards.pdf
Having visited the site I'm puzzled how people have got so upset, unless it's deliberate mischief-making to discredit actions to mitigate climate change. It's a bit of fun and kids report back to their parents, not on them.

Thank you Mel and Lisha for bringing the site to our attention. It's at http://www.climatecops.com/ and the stuff some people appear to have taken exception to is at: http://www.climatecops.com/downloads/climate_cops_crime_cards.pdf It's useful to see an example of an educational tool and the reaction is a lesson too. Having visited the site I'm personally puzzled how people have got so upset. It's a bit of fun and kids report back to their parents, not on them.
The following book and its review suggest at an alternative possibility - the 'upset' may not be genuine, but manufactured: http://www.spinwatch.org/component/page,shop.product_details/category_id,1/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,10/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,55
(incase that link doesn't work the book is Green Backlash and you can read about it on the Spinwatch website.)

A sense of humor and a creative mind might help the concerned folks understand the point of these materials. Kids love a mystery and also like being "empowered". I don't think too many of them are going to feel Stalin-like or start the next revolution.

Hi Mel
Like Lisha I wasn't sure of the position you were taking either Mel, but assumed this was sent as a "warning" of the prevailing attitude towards behaviour change - where it is seen as a threat rather than as a positive thing.
Lisha is right that kids are the key to changing bad habits and to quote a certain US politician here it seems to me that the suggestions in the email Mel forwarded are "lies and phoney outrage", because children have also been "used" to encourage families to change for the worst as in eat loads of junk food and worst still, the Hitler Youth. So enough of this rubbish what is wrong with children having a concern for their environment such that they want to make their future better, it is also quite disrespectful to children to suggest that they are so easily led that they will blindly demand their parent recycle (such a scary thought I know) we older people had our chance and blown it for them so they are taking action and good on them. Power grab! don't make me laugh, the power has been taken from the people by businesses interested in making money at the expense of the environment and the people and animals in it so I have to say its about time we took our planet back and if that means my children nagging me to turn the lights off then I will take it! "Go the kids" ... quite right.

Sorry Mel
I'm not quite sure of your position on this from this post but let me comment on the point raised about kids leading their parents into efficient and conserving habits. I don't care what you call it but kids are the key to changing bad habits which the rest of the population has already established in their lives. Forget all that crap about "power grabs", "Climate Cops" and other nonsensical ideological stuff. I know that in Australia, we're finding that the kids are quickly catching on to good habits and taking them home.. *not* to report on their parents but to educate them and challenge them to do something in a better way. All the things mentioned are stupid wasteful lazy practices which collectively add up to a massive amount of energy wastage. Why? Why should we accept this as the norm ??? ... I certainly don't. I say "Go the Kids !! " ... teach your parents well (...to borrow a line from one of my favourite bands, CSN&Y)
