We are trying to change the mindset of a traditionally affluent but currently very diverse private high school- kindergarten through high school, population 700. The school draws from a wide geographical area but we intend to map the homes of the students by zip code and will no doubt identify clusters that will lend to carpooling. A sizable portion of the juniors & seniors drive themselves to school. Does anyone have experience in setting up carpool services in situations such as this? Actually any information on getting carpooling started would help.

Ways to Make School Carpooling Appealing

Our organization, Passion for Action recently developed a Google map based tool for British Columbia students to calculate their emissions getting to and from school. It does have an element of ride sharing. See the MyTravel calculator at www.hastebc.org. This tool can be converted to work with any school or school district.

We are currently undertaking a ridesharing pilot study to determine what social marketing tools work or not - its particularly for businesses rather than schools but I'm sure it can/will be adapted. I don't have the results yet but should early in the new year. Out of interest does anyone have any examples of organisations that have a successful carpooling/rideshare scheme in New Zealand - I've got case studies overseas but are struggling for ones in NZ. By car pooling I mean sharing a vehicle to and or from work not using a company car once at work.

A very simple solution is to create a Google Earth map of everyone's address.
