Great Idea on How to Get People to Use the Steps

Unfortunately, the video did not explain very well what the firefly display is and why people want to see it. How much energy does the firefly display use? I imagine the students have at least used a kill-a-watt meter or similar to figure that out. And, have they calculated an estimate of elevator energy use?
Regarding energy use of elevators, E Source (www.esource.com) has published a report on this:
" To compare energy savings and costs among elevators
available today, we first have to know how much
energy different elevators consume. But calculating
the energy consumption of elevators isnt easy, which
explains why there has been little data on energy
consumption until recently, why building codes do
not specify elevator energy consumptions,[14] and why
it is difficult to rate the energy efficiency of elevator
products (see sidebar, page 9). Elevators are custom-engineered
systems rather than simple off-the-shelf
products, so it is difficult to forecast their energy
consumption in a specific building. Elevator traffic
patterns add complexity to the problem.
Rules of thumb for determining elevator energy
consumption are too inaccurate; they provide
results that researchers have found to differ by a
factor of two.[15] "
What you probably want is an estimate of energy use per ride, but it seems most studies look at elevator energy use per year.
ACEEE published a report on elevator efficiency: Harvey M. Sachs, Opportunities for Elevator Efficiency Improvements, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (April 2005).
The US GSA is supposed to have conducted a study per 2005 EPACT legislation. I don't know if it was completed.

Does anyone have any data on the power consumption of lifts / elevators? I would love to track down some data to use in a edu campaign.
Thank you!
