I am looking for travel behaviour change programs that are being used in secondary schools/high schools/colleges to encourage students to use more active forms of transport.

Hi Melanie,
The Cycling Promotion Fund that I work for runs the annual Bicycling Achievement Awards to reward and recognise innovation and to foster ideas. For number of years now we've had a category for Schools that promote and encourage cycling to schools. A number of secondary schools have been nominated in that time. Last year, 6 high schools were nominated and a TAFE, as well as many primary schools.
Award booklets can be downloaded from www.cyclingawards.com.au or hard copies ordered from the Cycling Promotion Fund: [email protected].
Fraser Coast Council have developed a list of resources and links for active transport to school: http://www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/community/documents/Resources%20and%20Links.pdf
Hope they're good leads.

Dear Melanie,
the Ride2School program in Melbourne addresses both primary and secondary schools. Some of our initiatives such as the 500 KM Gold Medal challenge are currently exclusively directed at secondary students. Other initiatives are just currently implemented and I cannot yet comment on their effectiveness, but they are designed to address what we have found to be a major barrier: That secondary students do not consider walking or riding a bike to school as socially desirable.
For more info feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone and have a look at our website: http://www.bv.com.au/ride2school/

Hi Melanie
Darebin City Council has done School Travel Plans with a couple of secondary school here in Melbourne. No good evaluation in yet, and there are proving to be challenges. A travel plan, though, allows a school to set out a number of different approaches and timelines etc. One of the schools was engaged through the Victoria Department of Transport's TravelSmart program. Let me know if you'd like more information or if you'd like me to send you a travel plan of the schools' to see what kind of actions they put in there.
regards, Ben
