I am involved in a running race series that runs basically year round in Southern Ontario and they do not have a waste management strategy to deal with the divertible waste(cups, bottles, organics, etc.)generated at these races. There is a growing trend of racers being selective about which events they participate in depending on the organizer's waste management program. I have volunteered to help this circuit reduce its environmental impact and increase its visibility by marketing these efforts.
Are there any similar and successful projects that would be a solid template for this ?
Thanks for your help!

The race director of the New River 50K in Virginia is a great example of a 'green race' - asking all participants to carry their own bottles/waist packs for the longer distance runs. Her site and contact information is here: http://www.ncnr.org/nrt50k.html
Montgomery County Road Runners Club in Maryland also has a 'Green Team' which works to make their races more sustainable. The sneaker drives have been a huge success. Their contact information is here: http://mcrrc.org/greenteam/

The Sustainable Living Foundation in Melbourne, which runs the annual Sustainable Living Festival every year has developed a tool for sustainable event planning. see:

In my research on Special Events Permitting for our City, I came across this manual from Kansas City with tips on creating a green event. I make this link available to all our event planners. There's some great ideas in it.

Also, the US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene last year was a sustainable event which won an Association of Oregon Recyclers award for their efforts.
