I am looking for any literature or ideas on promoting the use of compostable bags rather than plastic bags for organic waste collection, especially for a municipal program. Any help would be great! Thanks.

HI Matthew,
The City of Olympia launched a curbside organics program in July 2008. It was really an enhancement of curbside yard waste to include all food scraps. We currently use every opportunity we can to get the word out about compostable bags. One thing we did early on was to mail letters to local stores letting them know about the program and that customers might be looking for bags. We offered to add their name to a list of stores carrying bags and post that on the web and include it in our literature.
Here is a link to our website where you can find some of the information we've used. Just poke around a bit in the organics section at olympiawa.gov http://olympiawa.gov/city-utilities/garbage-and-recycling/organics-and-yard-waste.aspx
We had great aspirations of working with a compostable bag manufacturer and local store to offer a compostable bag discount event, but have yet to make that happen.
