I am working on an assignment for school about the problems associated with the use of plastic bottled water. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find information on the barriers to purchasing bottled water and past programs that have been effective in promoting the use of reusable bottles?

There are a number of organizations working on reducing bottled water use. They all have excellent resources on their websites. Since we're on the topic, this Thursday, March 11 is "Bottled Water Free Day" see http://www.bottledwaterfreeday.ca/, and ilovehrmtapwater.ca.

The UNICEF TAP project that launched in NY and subsequently in other cities is a good example. However, they tied getting tap water in restaurants rather than bottled water to a donation raising scheme to provide funds for clean drinking water for children in 3rd world countries. Not sure if they did this because it was more evocative and motivating than talking aboutt he environmental impact of bottled water, but I understand it was very successful. worth checking out
