Hi everyone,
I am the recycling coordinator in a small rural community in northern canada. The society I work for is going to launch an info campaign to promote recycling, door to door using a block leader approach.
My question is, what way would be the most effective in obtaining a written commitment from the residents. And where could I read a good example of the steps leading to this. I want to be sure that we are in control of the encounter, without seeming pushing. But to also maximize the effectiveness of the campaign, as we have very little funds, and are primarily running on volunteers.
Thankyou

Thank you Ruben. I really appreciate the feedback.
We are currently investigating using stickers for the garbage bins as the municipality is getting a new garbage truck so everyone will have new bins.

Hey Jana,
On the topic of social cues, last week i visited the Township of Langley. They are going to trial an Unhappy Face sticker--to be put on garbage cans with no accompanying recycling bin. I am looking forward to hearing how that goes.

Any more info on that Langley project? Seems bold, but also seems like trouble. Will the stickers be removable or will it still be there when they start recycling? Won't residents simply tear stickers off when they find it?Also what about those who do recycle but simply didn't have that recycled items to put out when the sitcker person comes around? Hopefully the stickers are recylcable because I imagine they're about to get an influx of them.

Nope, no more info yet. I just heard about it a week ago, and I think they are just starting to roll it out. I agree it is bold. I for one find it refreshing that a government is willing to do something bold and I think their results will be very important, one way or the other.

Hi Ruben,
How has the Langley project gone? Any resources to share? We are working on a Stop Service (and a warning/fining procedure) that seems similar to this tactic. Interested in what you've learned. Thanks.

Hi Lisa,
I have actually moved to Victoria BC, so I am out of touch with what is going on in Langley. You can check out my own work on my website at SmallAndDeliciousLife.com
Cheers,
Ruben.

We have done some Neighbourhood Zero Waste Challenges in Metro Vancouver and have seen good results with lawn signs. Commitments are a proven tactic, but I think it is more important to show to others how many people are recycling. So, a commitment to recycle, made public through a lawn sign or sticker on the garbage can, will do both.
A lot of research shows that social cues affect our behaviour very strongly. I think we should all be working on revealing the social cues whenever we can.
