Hi Craig,
I would suggest getting yourself a copy of the book Yes! 50 scientifically Proven Ways to be persuasive by Noah J Goldstein, Steve J Martin and Rober B Cialdini. There is a chapter on an energy consumption study - about Avoiding the magnetic middle (chapter 4). I used this strategy and a number of others to reduce recycling contamination, so these are transferable.
