We are a business situated next to the Iguaçu National Park in southern Brazil. From conversations with researchers and government officials it is clear that there is a lot of poaching and hunting within the borders of the National Park - we are currently working on developing a list of different poaching behaviours so that we can do some barriers/benefits research. However these activities are illegal and so undertaking surveys or interviews is problematic (and probably dangerous). Does anyone know of any similar projects or problems from around the world and approaches used to collect the data needed to consider what strategies might be effective. Thank you!

Hello, I am the Director of Social Marketing at Rare, an international conservation NGO that uses SM as its primary strategy. Go to rare.org and look for poaching - there are many examples - some for preserving prey species of extremely rare Siberian Tigers and others aimed a reducing poaching of the primary species as well. Feel free to contact me - [email protected]

I'm just guessing here, but any criminals who have been apprehended for poaching seem like they would be rich sources of information. Could you partner with government officials for access to these (presumably incarcerated) individuals, and perhaps in exchange offer reports/findings/recommendations to the government agencies charged with preventing poaching?
