Hi all,  If you’d like to learn something interesting about pollinators, consider listening to Xerces Society’s new pollinator conservation podcast, Bug Banter. They mainly cover the lives of invertebrates like butterflies, bumblebees, fireflies…even mosquitos!  Here are some examples of podcast titles, to give you an idea:  -       Saving the Bees: Why Honeybees are not the answer-       Pollinators in a Changing Climate: Threats and Solutions-       The Art and Importance of Counting Western Monarchs-       Wings of the Rockies: Exploring Butterfly Life Histories-       The Magic of Fireflies: Flashing Lights, Glowing Worms, and Chemical Reactions

These podcasts are entertaining, informative, and professionally done. They are also manageable in length, with most of them between 30 and 45 minutes. I have listened to several of them and recommend the Magic of Fireflies, Saving the Bees, and the Art and Importance of Counting Western Monarchs podcasts.  As an interesting little aside, you might like to know the story behind the origin of the name Xerces Society. Apparently, an American man named Robert Michael Pyle was in Britain on a Fulbright scholarship when he went to a lecture in London about a large blue butterfly that was endangered in Britain and extinct from California. It was called Xerces Blue. He realized that, unlike birds and mammals, there was very little protection for butterflies or insects at that time, so he founded the Xerces Society in 1971. This non-profit now protects invertebrates of all kinds and has over 80 staff members in offices across the United States.
