Self-determination theory suggests that better prediction of behaviour will be observed from intentions based on attitudes than intentions based on subjective norms. In a study of 187 undergraduates, analyses of the intention–behavior relationship for both internally vs externally/attitudinally vs normatively controlled people and internally vs externally/attitudinally vs normatively controlled behaviours supported this hypothesis.
