We are conducting a pilot to increase energy conservation and awareness in schools. There are 12 schools participating in the pilot. There is a mix of primary and secondary schools which vary in size from 415 students to 2078 students. I'm seeking advice regarding how many students from each school should participate in a pre-est and post test survey.

What Sample Size is Required for Survey?

Roughly speaking a random sample of 500+ students should be fine, but it depends somewhat on a. what you want to do with the data that you are collecting, and b. how many questions there are in the questionnairre. I'm thinking about statistical procedures like multiple regression and factor analysis in particular.
As a rule of thumb, with adults, and no compulsion to answer the questionnaire you're lucky to get a 30% response. Be careful about random sampling if you have the opportunity to sample particular classes in this instance.
