A sea turtle conservation project in Ada Foah, Ghana is looking for creative ways to secure sponsorships for a beach clean up to remove trash from sea turtle nesting areas. I wonder if members of the list have any suggestions.

I would suggest contacting AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) to place this on the educators list serve for ideas (or even to put out feelers for a U.S. zoo or aquarium that may be interested in sponsoring). PAAZAB is the African Association of Zoos & Aquaria--they may also have some suggestions. Corporate sponsorships from international companies that have any dealings in Ghana would be worth pursuing. Kofi Annan is Ghana's most well known citizen; I would ask to place him on an advisory board, or simply ask for help and guidance in manuevering through the system of funding from the United Nations Environment Program. Good luck! Sounds like an exciting project.

An integrated approach seems to be the most sustainable in addressing littering anywhere, including beaches. South Africa has several separate programmes to address various issues affecting beaches, including littering - the govt programme Coastcare, Blue Flag Beaches and Adopt-A-Beach. All are implementable through the Eco-Schools Programme, working with and through schoolchildren, thus creating buy-in from the adults of the future.

Mel,
I don't know very much about this program, but SOLV in Oregon has two beach cleanup events per year and corporate sponsors are involved in those. They've been doing this for over 20 years, so they probably would have some suggestions for you. Their website link is below. Good luck!
