Greetings
Does anyone know how much CO2 is contained in a 2-liter bottle of soda? I think the amount is probably similar for the different brands. If anyone knows how to calculate the amount or volume, please let me know. I am interested in seeing just how much CO2 is released when one performs the Mentos geyser experiment.

Soda is by weight approx 0.5% co2. There's roughly as much co2 in soda as there is in beer. Global consumption is, believe it or not, a substantial portion of annual global co2 emissions. It's harvested from underground deposits. Basically failed oil/gas exploration finds pockets of underground c02 which they bring to the surface. All of Australia's CO2 for this purpose comes from a single source in South Australia.
I hope I don't come across as a crank here, but there are more immediate social & environmental reasons to stop drinking soda than greenhouse gas contribution: -- poor recovery of soda containers for recycling everywhere (except maybe in bottle bill locales) -- depletion of complex natural habitats denuded to grow monocultural crops - sugar cane or sugar beet - and the underpaid labor issues associated with such crops -- adverse impacts on publicly owned wastewater treatment systems of private soda manufacturing (and that's in countries that control wastewater, think about China!) -- absolutely no nutritive value - in US, contributing to obestity/diabetes epidemic as folks get hooked (beer at least has B vitamins) -- some evidence that soda depletes nutrients from your bones -- diversion of water - a valuable natural resource - to non-nutritive uses

I'm curious as to where the CO2 in soda comes from: is it harvested from the atmosphere or somewhere else; or created in a laboratory through a chemical reaction. If the latter, I'm giving it up for sure! I don't want to support any more CO2 generation than I must.
