Here in Golden, Colorado we are looking for examples of programs that may be used to launch a city-wide sustainability effort. We are a small town, about 18,000, with additional population from the Colorado School of Mines. We have been engaged in a grassroots effort to identify and flesh out programs in 6 areas (energy, water, transportation, solid waste/recycling, buildings, and economic health). What we want is something that creates awareness, involvement, and excitement about a city-wide sustainability effort, something to roll out over a 6-12 month period. Any ideas?
Thanks so much!

Hi Saoirse,
We have just been endorsed as a Cittaslow here in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, Australia and to be endorsed we needed to research and provide evidence of what we were doing as a community to conserve our environment, value our local community, ensure local businesses were supported by buying local - reducing food miles - and much more. The evidence may simply relate to aspirations in these areas and rates your situation accordingly so if you score a certain level you can undertake the rest as work in process. It a very wholistic approach to small town/city life and has much to offer in the way of becoming sustainable. Check www.cittaslow.org or google cittaslow and see what you think. There are about 100 across Europe and UK and now 2 in Aust so there is an established network, criteria and support available to all.
Kind regards,
