Dear All -
A colleague and I are putting together a series of activities for an after-school program on topics of recycling, composting and reducing waste. We would like to include activities on global warming. Since this is an after-school program (varied age groups, no tests), we are looking for hands-on activities especially. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Having kids create videos is a great idea. Making it into a contest is very questionable, as competition is inherently destructive (I realize that this is a countercultural view, but that in no way affects the validity of evidence all around us if we care give a careful to look). THE book on the subject for anyone who's concerned about educating children (and adults) is: _No Contest: The Case Against Competition_ by Alfie Kohn (1992). Very highly recommended.
Cheers,
Adam
Green Teacher magazine has a curricula on climate change. See below. I have not actually seen the curricula, but my experience with Green Teacher has been great. Amy Sohner Bluegrass PRIDE Teaching about Climate Change Teachers of all grade levels will learn background information and practical ideas for making the abstract ideas of climate change more concrete, including:
-Experiments that demonstrate the greenhouse effect,
-Investigations of greenhouse gas sources and solutions,
-Hands-on explorations of energy and transportation alternatives,
-Home and school energy audit suggestions.

Dear Marjorie:
We ran a kids video contest for ten years, the last five being focused on climate change. While the contest part is not active (it is being rejuvenated and the topic areas broadened) the material is still available to anyone to access. The material includes puzzles, a mapping technique for kids to identify where their problems in their school are. This could just as easily be applied to their homes. When we get our funding attended to the video contest component will be re-opened under a new name. For now, see the Annual Conservation Video Contest on our website at www.e2management.com
Have fun with it.
