I'm interested in any ideas or sample programs that have attempted to increase curbside recycling rates in urban neighborhoods using social marketing and possibly economic incentives. I work for a nonprofit running a program of environmental education at a local alternative, urban high school. Our intent is to educate the students on local environmental issues, get them involved in hands-on projects, and then connect them with internships in the environmental field (city government and private business). My students come from families that do not participate in curbside recycling, and prior to our visit, they were not aware of the recycling drop-off center just down the street from the school. We have a land-fill crisis looming in Kansas City and it's critical that we increase recycling in this urban, low-income population. I appreciate any ideas or suggestions.
